Souls of the Disconnect of the Souls

Distant Animals A wonderful, emergent work of simple rhythmic phrases framed by textural swashes of guitar. It's one of those great albums that manages effortless simplicity whilst nonetheless offering so much more than the sum of its parts, a soundscape orientated by unusual dynamic and structural choices. Favorite track: Raise Your Eyes.

Greg Nieuws Darren's guitar here ranges from barely audible to earsplitting, but the arrangements, though layered, remain sparse and haunting. Very nice work. Favorite track: Souls of the Disconnect.

about

Daddy ‘where have you been’? ‘down the lonnen’ (lonnen is an old Geordie word for lane).

During Covid19 lockdown I have taken my daily exercise of walking the local lonnens. Dictaphone in hand I have been making field recordings and listening to music as I wander the connecting lonnens.

My go to album at the moment is ‘Souls of the disconnected of the SoulS’ by Darren j HollowaY. I am pleased that Darren as made this available via the Hrea’m label. First listen steers you in the direction of raw/sparse guitar and keyboard improvisation however repeated plays whist travelling the lonnens surrounded by hedgerows; fields; woodland and isolated buildings allows a deeper assemennt and ‘es parra me’ guitar drone.

Listening to ‘They came in loW’ and ‘SilverheaD’ conjures in the mind field workers, children going to and fro school, lovers, tinkers, milking parlor girls, and tradesmen all walking the lonnens, the rich sound makes the ghostly past come alive.

If you purchase the delights of D.j.Holloway 4 track cassette you can seek out his outstanding TAK TENT radio podcasts series called ‘Sunken Paths – music from tracks less seen’.

‘do I love it indeed I do’.

So if you go down the heathery lonnen today make sure you wear your boots for it is clarty.

Improvised and recorded in single takes over three consecutive nights in October 2020, Souls of the Disconnect of the Souls (the title a nod to Darren's favourite REM album, Fables of the Reconstruction of the Fables) is a raw and sparse mini album of guitar and keyboards, where the imperfections are left in in order to let the demons out.

HR-FIVE is now available here as a limited edition cassette and download, featuring updated and expanded artwork.
